You're holding a tiny, brand-new human. Everything feels surreal — the weight of them, the way they curl into you, the impossibly soft skin that smells like something you can't quite name. And somewhere between the feeding schedule and the sleep deprivation, someone asks: "Are you getting newborn photos done?"Maybe you've looked up a few photographers and felt your eyes go wide at the prices. Maybe you're wondering whether your phone can do the same job. Maybe you're genuinely unsure what you'd even be paying for. These are fair questions. And as a parent myself, I'd rather give you an honest, real answer than a sales pitch — so let's talk about all of it: whether professional newborn photos are worth the investment, what you can realistically expect to budget, and exactly what goes into a newborn photography package.

First, a Truth About Timing

Before we get into cost, there's something worth knowing: the window for true newborn photography is short. We're talking the first 5–14 days of life. That's it. In those first two weeks, babies are still deeply sleepy and curl naturally into those tiny, snug poses that look like they've barely left the womb. Their skin still has that soft, fresh-from-birth quality. After that window closes, they stretch out, wake up more, and — while still impossibly cute — they're no longer in that fleeting newborn stage.I say this not to create pressure, but because it changes the calculus a little. This isn't like deciding whether to book a family session that you could do any weekend. This is a brief, unrepeatable chapter of your baby's life. That context matters when you're weighing the cost.

Is Hiring a Newborn Photographer Actually Worth It?

Here's my honest answer: it depends on what you value — and on who you hire. A skilled newborn photographer brings together a lot more than a nice camera. They understand how light shapes a face. They know how to safely position a sleeping newborn into a pose that looks effortless (but took years of training to execute safely). They have the patience to spend two, three, sometimes four hours guiding a session around a baby's feeding schedule, settling time, and mood. At Red Balloons Photography, my training in fine art film photography shapes how I approach every image — I think about light, composition, and emotion the way a film photographer would, even in a digital world. I've also completed advanced newborn safety training with Kelly Brown through CreativeLive, which means every pose and prop setup follows strict safety protocols. That's not something you can replicate with a smartphone and a soft blanket. Beyond the technical side, there's the emotional one. Many of my clients tell me afterward that they didn't realize how much those images would mean to them until they had them. The first year moves so fast. You blink, and the newborn stage is already a memory. Professional photos give you something tangible to hold onto — and to pass on. That said, I want to be clear: not everyone needs the most extensive session. That's why I offer different tiers. The right fit depends on your budget, your goals, and what you want to walk away with.

What Should You Budget for Professional Newborn Photos?

The cost of newborn photography varies depending on the photographer's experience, the length of the session, and what's included. In the London, Ontario area, you can expect to pay anywhere from a few hundred dollars for a shorter session to well over a thousand for a premium experience with prints included. At Red Balloons Photography, I've structured my packages to offer something meaningful at each level. Here's a straightforward breakdown:

Wrapped Newborn Mini — $299 A 30–45 minute weekday session focused on baby-only wrapped poses. Clean, simple, beautiful. This is a great option if your budget is limited but you still want professionally captured images. A two-image parent add-on is also available if you'd like a few family moments included.

Signature Newborn — $449 A two-hour session that includes both wrapped and prop setups, with family included. You'll receive 15 fully edited digital images with a print release. This is my most popular session — it covers the classic newborn experience without rushing.

Heirloom Newborn — $649 For families who want the full experience. Three to four hours, all setups, family included, 20 edited digital images, and a $100 print credit toward fine art products. If you want a gallery you can print large, gift to grandparents, or build into an album, this is where I'd start. All sessions take place in my warm, cozy home studio in London, Ontario — a 15x10 ft space with multiple backdrop options and a calm, unhurried environment. On-location sessions are also available by request. One important note on budgeting: factor in about four weeks for your edited gallery to be delivered. I take my time with every image — colour, skin tones, light — because I want every photo to feel worthy of being printed and framed.

What's Actually Included in a Newborn Photography Package?

This is where a lot of confusion happens, because the word "package" means wildly different things from one photographer to the next. Let me walk you through what you can expect at Red Balloons Photography. Every session includes: A fully guided experience in a safe, clean, relaxed studio environment. My expertise in newborn safety and posing (UV-sterilized props, sensitive-skin detergent, three-point contact posing at all times). Multiple setup options depending on the package tier — wrapped poses, prop setups, or both. A private online gallery of fully edited, high-resolution digital images. A print release so you can print your favourites anywhere, at any size. About four weeks of careful, intentional editing — no rushed galleries. Depending on the package tier: Family inclusion (parents and siblings) — available in the Signature and Heirloom packages. A $50 print credit toward fine art products — included in the Heirloom package. Extended session time for more variety and setups. Fine art printed products — framed prints, albums, image boxes, and more — are available to add on. If printed products are important to you (and I'd gently argue they should be — digital files get lost, prints endure), we can talk through options when you inquire.

The Bottom Line

Professional newborn photography costs real money, and I won't pretend otherwise. But when I look at parents' faces when their galleries land in their inbox — the texts I get, the reviews, the moms who tell me they look at these photos every day — I know this is one of the purchases that tends to age really well. The newborn stage is measured in days, not months. If you've been on the fence, I hope this gives you what you need to make a decision that feels right for your family. If you're expecting or have a fresh little one at home, I'd love to chat. You can explore session details and reach out at  www.redballoonsphotography.com  — spots fill quickly, especially during spring and the holiday season, so the sooner you're in touch, the better.
