If you’re expecting a baby (or you’ve just seen those two pink lines and your brain is already spinning), you might be wondering: When do I actually book newborn photos? As a parent and a newborn photographer in London, Ontario, for over 12 years, I can tell you this—timing is one of the biggest stress-savers when it comes to planning a calm, cozy newborn session. The good news? You don’t need to have every detail figured out right now. You need a simple plan.
The best time to book your newborn session?
Ideally, you’ll book your newborn photographer in London, Ontario, during your second trimester (around 20–28 weeks). That’s the sweet spot where you’re feeling more confident, you have a due date to work with, and you still have plenty of availability to choose from. If you’re already in your third trimester—don’t panic. I often photograph families who book later, but the earlier you reach out, the better your chances of getting a spot that fits your ideal timing.
When do newborn photos actually happen?
Most newborn portraits are photographed when the baby is 5–14 days old. This is when newborns are typically sleepier and more naturally curled up—perfect for those soft, timeless images. That said, I’m always happy to photograph babies outside that window, too. If your little one arrives early, needs extra medical support, or you need more recovery time, we can adjust. Your baby doesn’t need to “perform.” We’ll follow their lead and keep everything gentle and safe.
What if my baby is already here?
If you’re reading this with a newborn on your chest—first of all, congratulations. Second: it’s still worth reaching out.I offer a few different options (including shorter wrapped sessions), and if I have space, I’ll do my best to fit you in. Even if baby is a few weeks old, you can still capture beautiful, meaningful images—eye contact, tiny expressions, and those sweet family moments you’ll want to remember forever.
