There's a moment that happens sometime around your baby's third or fourth month. You're scrolling back through your phone photos from those very first days and you think: wait, when did they stop doing that? That little scrunched-up sleeping face. The way they used to curl their knees right up to their chest. The tinyness of it all. It's gone. And if you weren't intentional about capturing it, you might have nothing more than a blurry, dimly lit snapshot to hold onto. I've been photographing families in London, Ontario for over 12 years. I'm also a parent. And I can tell you with certainty that the moments you think you'll remember forever are the ones that fade the fastest. This list isn't meant to overwhelm you. It's meant to help you see what's worth pausing for — so that years from now, when your kid is rolling their eyes and asking for car keys, you have something real to hold onto.

1. Those First Hours and Days:

If you have the chance to arrange a photographer for a fresh 48-hour session, do it. I know it sounds like a lot to take on when you've just given birth. But this window — before the puffiness settles, before the world starts showing up with casseroles and opinions — is something you cannot recreate. The way your partner looks at your baby for the first time. Your own exhausted, overwhelmed, completely-in-love face. The impossibly small human resting on your chest. These images will make you cry in the best way for the rest of your life.

2. Newborn Details (Fingers, Toes, Lips, Lashes)

Newborn photography exists almost entirely because of this: babies are only this small once, and it goes faster than you believe possible. I'm talking about the wrinkles on their knuckles. The way their fingers curl around yours without even trying. The rosebud lips. The eyelashes that look almost too perfect to be real. These details are gone within weeks. A professional photographer knows how to isolate and light these moments so they look like the works of art they are. Your phone camera, as good as it's gotten, just isn't built for this.

3. The Way They Sleep

Newborns spend most of their time asleep, and honestly? It's one of the most beautiful things you'll ever see. That furrowed little brow. The way they sigh. The completely boneless abandon of a baby who has not yet learned a single worry in the world. Newborn sleep photography — done safely and with proper posing training — captures something that feels almost sacred. At Red Balloons Photography, I take newborn safety incredibly seriously, which is why I've completed advanced training with Kelly Brown and CreativeLive. Every pose is supported, every prop is sanitized, and every session moves at the baby's pace.

4. Skin-to-Skin Connection

Nothing I've ever photographed is more moving than a parent holding their newborn against their skin. It doesn't matter if it's a scheduled, styled session or a quiet Sunday morning at home. That image — the size comparison, the tenderness, the way a parent's hands look wrapped around something so small — is one of the most powerful photographs I ever make. If you can have one professional photo taken in the first year, let it be this one.

5. The First Real Smiles (Around 6–8 Weeks)

There is a very specific kind of sleep-deprived joy that only exists when your baby smiles at you for the first time and you realize it's actually a smile, not gas. This is a fleeting window. It's worth capturing. By around six weeks, babies begin responding to faces and voices with those gorgeous, gummy, wide-open smiles. A session around this age can catch that magic in beautiful light, with both the baby and the parent's reaction preserved in the frame.

6. Tummy Time Progress

It starts as a struggle. Tiny arms flailing, face pressed into the mat, not at all sure about this arrangement. And then one day, they push up. They lift their head. They look around like they own the place. Tummy time is one of those developmental milestones that feels small in the moment but looks enormous in photos. The determination on a baby's face when they're working so hard to hold that head up — it's hilarious and heroic all at once.

7. The 3-Month Chunk Phase

Let's talk about the rolls. Somewhere between two and four months, babies undergo what I can only describe as a spectacular softening. Cheeks round out. Wrists develop adorable little creases. Thigh rolls appear seemingly overnight. This phase is beloved in the newborn photography world for good reason. These babies are interactive, alert, and absolutely edible-looking. A session at this stage captures the chubby sweetness that parents spend the rest of their lives trying to remember.

8. Sitting Up for the First Time

There's a milestone that happens somewhere around five to seven months that changes everything. Baby sits up on their own. They look around with this expression of pure satisfaction, like they've just solved something very important. They wobble. They catch themselves. And then they topple over sideways and look at you like it was intentional. This is also a perfect time to book a professional milestone session. Babies at this stage are engaged, expressive, and usually very happy to show off their new skill to a camera.

9. Starting Solids (The Delightful Mess)

The first time a baby encounters pureed sweet potato is a moment of profound philosophical confusion. They don't know what it is. They're not sure they want it. But it's going everywhere, and somehow they end up covered in it, and the face they make while deciding whether this new life experience is acceptable is one of the funniest things you will ever see. Document this. Honestly. The mess, the confusion, the orange smears — this is everyday life with a baby, and it is absolutely worth preserving.

 10. The 6-Month Milestone Session

Six months is a natural pause point in the first year. Your baby is now a full person with opinions, expressions, and a personality that is very clearly their own. A six-month milestone session — one of the sessions I offer here at Red Balloons Photography — is designed to capture who your baby is right now. Not who they were as a newborn. Not who they're about to become. But this specific, unrepeatable moment in the middle. These sessions are some of my favourites to photograph, because the babies are so awake, so curious, and so willing to interact with the world around them.

11. First Steps (Even the Wobbly, Uncertain Ones)

Walking usually begins somewhere between nine and fifteen months, and the lead-up is almost as magical as the moment itself. The cruising along furniture. The letting go and catching themselves. The wild-eyed, arms-out, determined waddle toward someone they love. If you can position yourself to capture these moments — whether on your phone in the living room or with a photographer for a milestone session — you will not regret it. First steps are one of those milestones that sound ordinary until you're watching them happen and you realize you're completely overwhelmed.

12. The First Birthday Cake Smash

I have photographed hundreds of one-year-olds meeting their first cake, and I will never, ever get tired of it. The tentative first touch. The realization that this entire beautiful, frosted thing is apparently for them. The moment they commit and just go for it entirely. Cake smash sessions are joyful and chaotic and utterly irreplaceable. At Red Balloons Photography, I design themed setups that match your vision — from simple and classic to wild and colourful — and I make sure we get both the sweet, styled portraits and the full glorious mess. One year is a big deal. It deserves more than a candid phone shot.

You Don't Have to Capture Everything Yourself

Here's the thing I want to leave you with. You are in the middle of one of the most demanding, beautiful, exhausting seasons of your life. You don't have to be the one behind the camera for every moment. In fact, if you're always holding the phone, you're not in the picture at all. That's where I come in. At Red Balloons Photography, I specialize in exactly these early chapters — newborn, infant, milestone, and family sessions — right here in London, Ontario. My sessions are unhurried, baby-led, and designed to feel like the least stressful part of your week. You show up. I take care of the rest. If you're expecting, or if your baby's next milestone is coming up faster than you'd like, I'd love to talk about what a session might look like for your family.
