What you’re paying for when you hire a professional photographer.

When you start shopping around for a professional photographer the prices can sometimes seem quite daunting. What very few consumers realize though is that there is a lot more to photographing your event than just clicking a button at the right time.

So what are you paying for when hiring a professional photographer?

Time is money. Just like any other professional, a photographer needs to put in the hours to get the job done. This includes consultation, traveling to and from the location, shooting the photos, and editing, and processing the orders. You’d be surprised at how long it takes to get the end result that is finally delivered to you. Once they shoot the photos, it’s not as simple as downloading the images and delivering them to you. They have to process the files, convert them to the correct file type as well as make sizing and color adjustments to make each image pop.  If your photographer is also creating a book or album for you, they need to spend time designing it too.

Equipment is expensive. Even though this is a very small part of why photographers charge the prices they do, it’s important to remember that quality equipment plays an important role in being able to produce the photos that they do. Professional equipment not only allows for the production of high-quality images, but it also gives photographers the ability to work in areas with less than favorable lighting conditions or at venues where using a flash is prohibited.

They have spent years acquiring a very specific skill. Photography, like any other profession, requires experience and specific skills. From knowing what lighting and camera settings to use, knowing how to pose people and help them feel comfortable in front of the camera.  Great  photographers don’t rush the editing process either, it takes time to produce the desired result and turn your photo into a work of art that you’ll proudly want to display in your home.

It’s still a business. A professional photographer is still running a business, which means they will more than likely have overhead costs such as rental fees for their studio and the upkeep of equipment. Photographers also need to budget for professional association fees, equipment and liability insurance, and fees for courses that will allow them to stay ahead by continuously honing their craft.

A professional photographer who is dedicated to their art and willing to go the extra mile for their clients is always well worth the price.

Choosing a location for your family photoshoot https://www.redballoonsphotography.com/blog/2023/2/choosing-a-location-for-your-family-photoshoot Choosing the Ideal Location for Your Family Photo Session

Location ideas for your next family photoshoot.

Family photos are timeless and if you are looking to update your family portraits or take some for the first time, you might be wondering about what location to use for them.

Here are some things to consider before choosing a location:

Comfort

A family photoshoot is where you get to smile, laugh and be yourselves. If some of your family members are shy then you might not want to choose a very public spot.

Personalities

What makes your family unique? Choose a location that fits in with who you are as a family. Do you enjoy spending time in your garden or on a couch reading books? Perhaps you spend lots of time outdoors and on camping trips? Your location should speak to your personalities.

Convenience

Take each member of your family into consideration. What are their ages and needs? If you have two toddlers that might need to use a bathroom at any time, then a remote spot is probably not the best idea.

Family Photoshoot Location Ideas

Below are some ideas of where you could arrange your photo session.

At Home

Sometimes the best shots can be taken right at home. Get your family outside in the garden or setup your living room for a classic look and feel.

In the City

For a more modern feel to your photos you could get out in the city and take a few photos next to an interesting building or in a funky alley way.

In Nature

If you’re looking for a calm, natural setting then choose an outdoor location. Parks and forests make for beautiful backdrops.

In Studio

If you’re looking for a more private setting where you can use props and backdrops, then a studio setting might be more for you. Studio photos will also give you the option to take more posed, structured photos.

Quick Tips for Photographing your kids https://www.redballoonsphotography.com/blog/2023/2/quick-tips-for-photographing-your-kids Quick Tips for Photographing Your Kids

How to take great photos of your children.

Parents can never take enough photos of their children but sometimes it can be difficult to get a really great shot. Below are a few quick tips that you can apply the next time you take your camera out to capture a moment with your kids.

Try and stay away from asking your kids to pose. Instead, be around to capture the emotions they display in a moment. If you’re patient enough and simply enjoy the time with your children, you’ll find it much easier to capture the essence of it.

Get down to their level. If you’re photographing very small children try and get down to their level to photograph them. This angle gives you a more interesting background too.

Have a conversation with them. Having a conversation with your child about their favorite superhero or their best friend at school will make for lovely facial expressions. You could even have them sing along to their favorite songs for extra fun photos.

Your smartphone is the perfect tool for capturing candid moments. Your children are probably very used to seeing you with your smartphone so won’t think anything of you keeping it close by. Have it ready when you’re out and about with them. You never know when they might give you the perfect shot.

Use unique locations to your advantage. If you have planned a walk in the woods or a day at the beach, take advantage of your unique surroundings to capture some great pictures.

Avoid midday sunlight. Lighting makes a big difference in photos so aim for early morning or evening light for outdoor shots and open windows and doors for indoor shots

Creative Family photoshoot Ideas https://www.redballoonsphotography.com/blog/2023/1/creative-family-photoshoot-ideas

Creative Family Photoshoot Ideas You’ll Want to Try

If family photos are one of your annual traditions or if you’re just looking to change up the photos that are currently hanging in your home, there are so many unique photoshoot ideas that you can use that go beyond the usually posed portraits.

Below is some inspiration as you plan your next family photoshoot.

Silhouettes

If you have a beautiful location in mind, taking family photos at dusk or even at night with the stars as your backdrop, will allow you to capture your silhouettes and give you a unique family portrait to hang in your home.

Reflections

Have your family stand in front of a still body of water so that you can capture your reflections instead.

Footprints

If you still have young children in the house, use your feet to create a special image that you can frame or print on canvas. The photo could be of your feet intertwined at the foot of the bed or of your feet in the sand at the beach.

Perspective

If you’re looking for something a little more creative, why not line your family members up and take a shot from the side so that you see your faces from a different angle?

Kisses

This is another great option if you have a new baby or a toddler in the house. Have each parent plant a kiss on the baby’s face. This photo allows you to capture the sweet innocence of your child at that age and the love you have as a family.

Dress Up

The best family photos are those that capture a genuine moment between loved ones. Have your husband and son get dressed in their Sunday best to get a shot of them fastening their ties or bowties in the mirror. Play dress up with your little girl by placing curlers in your hair and hers and get a shot of the two of you looking in the mirror.

Don’t be afraid to get creative at your next shoot. Ask us for advice or ideas if you need some extra help.

Why Hire a Professional Photographer https://www.redballoonsphotography.com/blog/2023/1/why-hire-a-proffessional-photographer

Why You Should Hire a Professional Photographer

With the current digital camera market and smartphones that take such good photos, is there really a reason to hire a professional photographer? Below are just some of the reasons why a pro is a better choice.

An expensive camera does not automatically result in photographic skills. Just because your friend, co-worker, or relative has a high-speed, top-quality digital camera doesn’t mean they know what they’re doing behind the camera. While quality equipment does help the average consumer improve their photography game, a professional photographer offers an artistic approach, creative eye, and experience that cannot be purchased at a camera store.

Professional equipment has its perks. Shooting with top-of-the-range cameras and professional lighting equipment helps us to take the best shots, even in less-than-optimal circumstances. Capturing low light, nighttime and even high-speed action shots can be tricky for the amateur photographer but a professional knows what’s required to capture those types of shots.

Posing is our thing. Ever tried to get friends and relatives, including kids, to stay still and pose for a big group shot? It’s easier said than done. Need a little inspiration for your own special portraits? A professional photographer can help. Photographers perform these tasks sometimes daily, so they have perfected the skills required to get the best results while making everyone feel comfortable in front of the camera.

They’re hired. Using a friend or family member to take your photos could mean missed moments. A professional photographer is exclusively hired to capture the day and won’t miss out on photos because they’re chatting with the other guests, grabbing a drink or dancing. Hiring a professional photographer guarantees you capture as many perfect moments as possible.

The end result is part of the process. Professional photographers not only capture your photos, but they also edit and retouch images in order to achieve a beautiful finished product. They can also assist with extras such as albums, custom prints, and canvases.

How to build a Gallery Wall https://www.redballoonsphotography.com/blog/2022/1/how-to-build-a-gallery-wall How to Build a Beautiful Photo Gallery Wall

Ideas for creating a photo wall in your home.

Even though we store all of our photos digitally, nothing quite beats displaying beautiful photos of your family and friends around your home. A gallery wall can be a great focal point in your home but in order to get the perfect end result, your photo wall will need some planning.

Choosing Your Wall

The wall that you see when you first walk into a room is often the perfect spot for a photo wall if you’re looking to make it the main focus of the room. If you would prefer a more subtle option then look for an area that doesn’t have any décor or a space where regular artwork might not work, such as the area next to a stairway or the narrow part of a wall that divides two rooms.

Choosing a Layout

There are countless photo wall layouts that you can use to build your gallery.  Pinterest offer tons of inspiration. The best thing to do once you have your heart set on a specific layout is to cut out the shapes of your frames and use masking tape to create a mock layout on your wall. You might find that you need to switch a few of the frames around or relook at the design completely.

Choosing Your Frames & Photos

Most designers would suggest that neutral colors work the best when designing your photo gallery but sometimes adding a pop of color in-between the frames also looks amazing. You might prefer to choose frames in one color then opt for different sizes and styles to change things up a bit. Placing an antique frame in-between your more modern frames gives the wall a unique touch. If you decide to use different colors and styles of frames then try printing your photos in black and white. Remember, your photos should always be the focal point.

A photo gallery in your home is a great alternative to traditional décor and wall art so take the time to make it special.

6 Ways to look fantastic in photos https://www.redballoonsphotography.com/blog/2021/11/6-ways-to-look-fantastic-in-photos 6 Ways to Always Look Fantastic in Photos

Photography tips and tricks to help you look your best .

From school yearbooks to friends’ weddings, we’ve all been in front of camera at some point or another and if you’ve recently looked at a photo with disdain then this post’s for you. If you know that you’re going to have a lens pointed in your direction in the near future, below are six simple ways to get better results.

  1. Get to Know Your Face. This applies to professional photoshoots as well as every day photos. Take time getting to know your face, how to smile naturally and which side or angle of your face you like better.
  2. Easy on the makeup. While an evening out is a different story when it comes to makeup, if you’re having headshots, family or maternity photos taken, go easy on the makeup. You want some basic coverage but don’t overdo it. You should also only stick to accentuating one part of your face so choose either your eyes or lips but not both. Controlling your chin. Photos where your neck is elongated and your chin is pushed slightly forward will lift your face and give it a more angular look. You might want to practice this beforehand in order to get used to it.
  3. Pick your outfit carefully. Put some thought into what you’ll wear to your shoot. Pair bold designs and patterns with solid colors to avoid too much distraction. You should also pay attention to the fit and shape of your outfit. Make sure it compliments you and that you feel comfortable.
  4. Use lighting to your advantage. This is something that your professional photographer will be an expert at but the right lighting can mean the difference between that wow factor and disappointment. Avoid standing directly under a light as this will create weird shadows on your face.  This is something we will help you out with because we are experts so take our advice when we suggest a specific time for photos.  If shooting outdoors, the best light will be 15-20 minues before & after sunset.  Unless it’s an overcast day, we will always try to get you in full shade so that the lighting isn’t dappled or causing weird shadows on your face.

As much as the above tips will help you during your professional photoshoot, always remember to have fun and relax as this will do wonders for your photos

What should you ask your photographer https://www.redballoonsphotography.com/blog/2021/8/what-should-you-ask-your-photographer 6 Questions You Should Be Asking Your Photographer

There are a lot of people out there claiming to be photographers, and as a consumer, you should know how to get the right photographer for you! Here are a few questions to ask to find the right fit for your needs.

How long have you been a photographer?  The longer a photographer has been in business, the more likely it is that it’s not just a hobby for them.

Which types of photography do you specialize in?  It’s uncommon for a photographer to specialize in several different types of photography as they often only specialize in one or sometimes two genres.  For example, a photographer who specializes in newborn photography might not be the best candidate to shoot wedding photos unless they have the experience in doing so.

Do you have many repeat clients? This is a great litmus test of not only the quality of a photographer’s work but of their customer service too.

What is your policy on rescheduling a session?  An experienced photographer will definitely have a policy in place when it comes to a customer canceling or rescheduling a photography session.  A photographer with policies indicates that they have experience with different types of customers and situations and have created policies accordingly.

Have you had any experience with (name your specific concern)?  If you have any specific concerns regarding your photo session such as the photographer’s ability to work with a special needs child for example, find out if they have ever handled that type of situation before. Do not dismiss a photographer and their abilities based on their answers to your concerns. If given adequate notice, an experienced photographer should be able to deal with any situation you present them. This is the hallmark of a true pro.

Silent Question: Use your gut to judge their personality and rapport. A photographer’s main job is to capture emotions and moments. If your photographer doesn’t mesh well with you on the phone or in person, chances are you and your family will not mesh well with them at your session and this will show in your photos.

What to wear for your photoshoot https://www.redballoonsphotography.com/blog/2021/8/e How to Decide What to Wear to Your Photoshoot

Top tips for getting the most out of your professional photography session.

If you are prepping for your first photoshoot you probably have a couple questions about what to expect. A common concern for people having their photos taken for the first time is what to wear.

8 Top Tips for Deciding What to Wear for a Photoshoot

What is the purpose of the photoshoot? This should be your first thought when deciding what to wear. Choose an appropriate outfit for the occasion and something that suits your personality.

Keep the location & season in mind. Where is the photoshoot taking place? Choose an outfit that will keep you feeling comfortable and confident. For example, if you’re on a beach, those new high heels might not be the most logical choice and you might end up looking a bit out of place.

Mix and match. Don’t be afraid to wear patterns or prints for your photoshoot but keep them to a minimum and try to pair them with solid colors. If you’re having a family photoshoot for example, have two family members in printed items and two in solid colors. Play with different colors to match the mood and setting of the shoot.

Make your photos timeless. You might love that trendy top or pair of pants now but will your photos stand the test of time if you wear that item of clothing?

What to do about makeup. This would depend on the type of photos you are taking. Fashion shoots will call for more dramatic makeup but for your everyday maternity, family or portrait shoots, keep your makeup natural and to a minimum.

Fit is more important that you think. If you already have an outfit in mind for your shoot, try it on before the time to make sure that it fits correctly and compliments your body type.

Try not to go brand crazy. Wearing too much clothing with prominent brand names just makes you look like a walking ad. Clothing with large graphics on it also doesn’t work well as it will end up being the focus of your photos.

Coordinate family members. Once you have picked your outfit coordinate the rest of the family, using your choices create a colour palette with no more then 4 colours, that you can use to choose the rest of the families clothes. You don't want to all be wearing the same white top blue bottoms or you will end up looking like you are wearing a school uniform.

Remember to have fun and be yourself!

Why I love what I do https://www.redballoonsphotography.com/blog/2021/8/why-i-love-what-i-do Why Your Photographer Loves What They Do

If you have ever wondered what spurs on a photographer’s passion, you are about to find out. Below are just some of the many reasons your photographer wouldn’t change their job for anything in the world.

  1. Photography changes how you see things. You notice colors, textures, flowers, trees, people, shapes and light in a way most people never see them.
  2. You pay more attention to the beauty around you. Even the most mundane object can become beautiful when you photograph it in a creative way. Many photographers love their job because they develop a fascination with the world around them by viewing it through new eyes
  3. It's an amazing creative outlet. You get the chance to put a little bit of who you are into each photo that you take. Anyone can click a camera's buttons but not everyone can truly make a photo come to life
  4. It's a challenge. Creating amazing photos that capture the magic of everyday life doesn’t come without hard work, dedication and imagination. There is always something new to explore and a new way to take the same photos. It’s a job that never gets boring
  5. You get to meet new people all the time. A photographer works with people from all walks of life. Getting to know someone new is a part of the process of bringing someone’s personality through in a photo. It also makes the job a lot more fun!
  6. The flexibility is great. Being a full time photographer means you get to work your own hours. This doesn’t mean it’s a laid back profession though. A photographer is always aiming to perfect their craft, taking on new challenges and helping their clients achieve the perfect pictures.

When you decide to pay for a professional photo session, know that you are hiring an individual who is passionate about what they do and is willing to go the extra mile to help you create beautiful photos that you can treasure forever.

Choosing your Photographer https://www.redballoonsphotography.com/blog/2021/8/choosing-your-photographer How to Pick the Perfect Professional Photographer

What you need to consider before you pay that photography deposit.

If you’ve started the search for a photographer then you’ll know just how many options there are. Before you go ahead and book a professional photographer for a shoot though, there are a couple of important things to consider.

What style are you looking for?

Photographers have different styles so you need to decide on someone who can help you achieve the end result you are looking for. This applies to everything from wedding and maternity shoots to family and corporate shoots. Ask the photographer for some examples of their latest work to evaluate whether they can cater to your needs.

Research and review.

Before you invest in a professional photographer you need to do your homework. Get online to find a few customer reviews, browse around their website to view their latest work, and have a look around their social media pages to find out what others are saying about them. These platforms will also give you a good idea of their personality and style. Some other important points to consider when researching photographers are:

  1. Budget. Do their services fall within your price range?
  2. Expertise. Are they experienced enough to give you the results you are looking for?
  3. Location. Are they based in your area and are they willing to travel to a specific location if need be?
  4. Quality. Is the quality of their photos good enough? Look at aspects such as sharpness, exposure and saturation.

Create a short list.

Once you have done your research, create a short list of professional photographers that stand out for you. Get in touch with each of them to discuss your needs and to ask any questions that you might have. It’s important that you chat with the photographer over the phone if not in person as this is the best way to get to know them and find out whether you’ll be able to work with them. Feeling uncomfortable or stressed out around your photographer makes for bad photos.

It’s important that you pick a photographer that you have confidence in. Your photos are there to last you a lifetime so while there is nothing wrong with helping out your photographer friend who has just started out, it’s best to choose an experienced photographer for important events and occasions that you can’t relive.

Surviving a Family photo session https://www.redballoonsphotography.com/blog/2021/7/surviving-a-family-photo-session Surviving a Family Photoshoot

How to make your next family photo session a stress-free one.

Family photos are truly timeless and such a great keepsake for future generations.  Getting the family together to take those perfect portraits can turn into chaos if not approached correctly. There is usually a lot more to consider when it comes to a family photoshoot since there are members of all ages, which means that there is some extra coordination involved.

Below are some family photoshoot ideas and tips to keep you and your loved ones calm and smiling the whole way through.

  1. Timing is everything. If you have younger children involved in the shoot, try and arrange the photoshoot at a time when they would be well rested. A rested child makes for happy photos. On that note, make sure that all family members have gotten enough sleep the night before as this helps with the fun and relaxation aspects of the session.
  2. Dos and don’ts of bribery. Get your family excited about the photoshoot instead of offering a reward in return for their cooperation. This tends to lead to forced smiles and an irritated bunch of people. If you do have small children coming along it’s not a bad idea to give the photographer some bribery options in the form of toys or small food items to make those difficult moments a little easier
  3. Relinquish control. As much as you’ll want to direct your children on where to stand and how to pose, it’s best to leave that to the photographer as they know what works best. Not having this pressure will also make you feel more relaxed.
  4. It’s not just about the posing. The best photos happen when you’re having fun so joke and play with your children, hold your partner’s hand and just let the moments happen.
  5. Plan ahead. Discuss all of your requirements with your photographer beforehand so that the family photo session can just flow. Let your photographer know if you want specific pictures taken.
  6. Keep those sugar levels up. If everyone is well fed, the photoshoot will also run a lot smoother. It’s also not a bad idea to take a few snacks and some water along for those who might need it

Alternatives to displaying your photos https://www.redballoonsphotography.com/blog/2021/7/alternatives-to-displaying-your-photos Fun Alternatives for Displaying Your Photos

Amazing photos deserve an equally amazing display but this doesn’t mean you always have to use a traditional frame to showcase them in your home.

Below is some inspiration for deciding how to display your favorite memories.

If your home décor is very contemporary you might want to consider canvas gallery wraps, image blocks or standout mounts to showcase your photos. Going frameless is also a great option if you’re looking for something truly sleek and modern.

If rustic and chic is more your style, then why not turn old pieces of wood into stained photo clipboards, using binder clips to hang the photos against the wood. Another unique option is to hang your photos on a thin cable to make it look like a clothesline. Binder clips also work perfectly for this.

If you’re the creative type and have some extra time on your hands then there is the option of creating frames out of washi tape. This way you can incorporate different colors and designs around your photos to really make your walls pop.

If you are a fan of frames, why not buy different sizes, colors and styles and create one big photo wall that displays a variety of memories. There are so many shapes and designs that you can use to create your photo wall and really make it your own.

Since we work with so many creative vendors who offer a wide variety of traditional and non-traditional framing and display options, we are able to help you pick a unique option that suits your home and style. Whether it’s a traditional frame with hand-cut matting, shadow box or float frames, we will help you pick the right option for your home.

No matter which method you choose, get creative. Filling your walls with a lifetime of memories is one of the most special and visual ways to tell the story of your family, so get hanging.

A guide to professional photo restictions https://www.redballoonsphotography.com/blog/2021/7/a-guide-to-professional-photo-restictions Baby Andrew 2020photographed by Lee Anne Jackson from 99 Red Balloons Photography. A Brief Guide to Professional Photo Restrictions

The photos that a photographer hands over to you are part of their life’s work. It has their name or branding so there are a few important restrictions to note when it comes to the professional digital images that you receive.

1) Copyright. The digital images that your photographer provides you with have a copyright, which means the photographer has the option to use those photos to market their work and services anytime in the future. We are however also respectful of our clients so if there are any images that you would prefer to keep private, it’s best to let us know about it ahead of time so that we can honor your wishes.

2) Image type. We aren’t able to provide you with the original files or raw images. All images given to the client have been cropped and have been edited. If you do require further touch ups we would need to provide you with a quote.

3) Image altering. While we appreciate your business and welcome the sharing of our photos on social media platforms, we ask that the images not be altered in any way as this is against our copyright policies.

What constitutes image altering?

  • Adding filters or editing photos in Photoshop
  • Removing our logo or studio name
  • Color correcting or including transitions from color to black and white
  • Clipping people or objects out of the original shot

So why do we have this as a restriction? Our photos are a representation of our work so when a customer alters an image it directly impacts our name and brand in the industry. When we present you with final images, they have already been through our editing process and don’t require further alterations.  When images are altered, the results are not always reflective of our original work and can then be mistaken for ours. We greatly appreciate your loyalty and cooperation in this matter.

We are happy to give a quote if you want images to be edited in a specific way or if you want further alterations made.

How to choose the perfect photoshoot location https://www.redballoonsphotography.com/blog/2021/4/how-to-choose-the-perfect-photoshoot-location How to Find the Perfect Photo Shoot Location

Choosing a photoshoot location might seem like a big deal but it really doesn't have to be difficult. A location usually drives some of the other decisions you will need to make about your shoot so it’s important to choose the right place. Here are a few questions to ask yourself before you decide on a location:

1. What kind of theme do I want? If a particular building or natural backdrop would work well with your theme, look around your area for spots that meet your requirements. If you don't know what kind of backdrop you want, take an afternoon drive around your city for inspiration. It's easy to overlook beautiful spots that are practically in your backyard. Ask family, friends or your photographer for ideas too.

2. Are you allowed to take pictures there? Make sure that you can legally take pictures at the location that you have in mind. If it's not public property or available to the public you will need to get permission first.

3. Is it accessible? Consider that not all outdoor locations may be available all year round or you might not be able to get to them at all. Your safety is also an important aspect to think about before you decide on a location. Taking pictures on a mountain ledge may look neat but it’s best not to put yourself in harm’s way.

Materntiy - Prince Albert's DinerMaterntiy - Prince Albert's Diner

4.How do you get to your location? Will it be easy to walk to the session location and if not, are you able to change your clothing and touch up your hair and makeup before the shoot? You should also find out whether there is a restroom that’s close enough in case you need it.

5.Will the photo session be in a public place? If the location you have chosen has a lot of foot traffic, you need to ask yourself whether you are comfortable being photographed in front of others. If not, you might want to rethink your choice in location

Make sure that your location doesn’t become a distraction and that there is shelter nearby if you need it. Your location tells a story so it’s worthwhile to choose a meaningful spot.

Top 5 tips for making a photo session with kids easier https://www.redballoonsphotography.com/blog/2021/4/top-5-tips-for-making-a-photo-session-with-kids-easier Top 5 Tips for Making a Photo Session with Kids Easier

If you’re preparing for a photo session with your children, you may be feeling a bit apprehensive. Children aren’t always easy to deal with, which is why the below tips will definitely come in handy before your upcoming photo session.

1. Don't make a huge deal out of it. If you're stressed out and cranky, your kids will usually pick up on it and act accordingly. Their behavior will usually be better if you are relaxed and having fun. You may have to make some compromises to keep the peace such as letting your energetic daughter's hair stay straight instead of curling it because she won't sit still. Focus on the big picture and don't sweat the small stuff.

2. Make it fun. Let the kids have a couple of “fun pictures” where they get to pick their own poses or props. You get to keep the more serious photos while they get to keep their silly photos. This way everyone wins.  If you are struggling to get your kids to sit still, turn the photo session into a game. Simon Says usually works like a charm.

3. Be prepared.  If you're going to be out for several hours, ensure that your children are well-rested and have had their naps. Bringing some snacks and activities along is also a great idea. If you are having your own photos taken too then you might want to bring a babysitter or family member along to watch the kids. If you happen to be shooting in a remote location, you never know when you might need something like bug spray, tissues, or a first aid kit so bring that along too.

4. Be patient. Save your sanity by trying not to control the photo session too much. Sometimes the best photos come from kids just doing their own thing. Work with your photographer and your photos will look fantastic.

5.  Have a chat. Get your children talking to both you and the photographer about topics such as school or their favorite songs. This allows them to feel more comfortable around your photographer and will also give your photographer a chance to capture a few candid and cute expressions.

A Guide to Posing for Your Family Photos https://www.redballoonsphotography.com/blog/2021/4/a-guide-to-posing-for-your-family-photos A Guide to Posing for Your Family Photos

The key to taking genuine and authentic family photos is knowing how to pose in front of the camera.

If you’ve never taken professional family photos before or if you simply want to improve on your last session, here is some advice on how to pose that will leave you with exceptional images.

Get Close

The last thing you want is a family portrait that looks stiff and awkward. The secret to creating a beautiful, intimate family photo is to get close. Snuggle up with the people you love if you want the best photos. If there are people of varying heights in the photo, take a few photos on the same level so that you can get your heads close together too.

Have Fun

Your photos always look more authentic when your family is genuinely having fun and laughing. Spend time talking about your favorite vacation or a memory that makes you all laugh out loud. These candid moments always make for the best photos.

Keep it Natural

When you overthink posing, it takes away from the genuineness of your photos, which is why it helps to shoot your family photos in a setting where you’re all comfortable and where you can go about your lives as naturally as possible. For example, if you’re in an outdoor setting, take your little one for a walk. If you’re shooting at home, bake something together or snuggle up for a story.

Use Your Surroundings

Very often, standing upright in the middle of a room or garden will make your photos look and feel stiff. Use your surroundings to make yourselves more comfortable. For example, if there’s a wall in the vicinity, lean up against it. If there’s a couch available, pose on that for a few shots.

Make Use of Props

If you would like to change things up a bit or give a younger child something to do, you can also always incorporate a few basic props into your photos to get a few non-standard shots.

If you still have questions about your shoot and how to make the most of it, let us know and we will be happy to assist you with additional tips.

Choosing props for you Session https://www.redballoonsphotography.com/blog/2021/3/choosing-props A picture containing indoor, decorated

Description automatically generated Choosing Props for Your Next Photo Session

Have you ever thought about adding props to your photo sessions? Props can add interest, depth and an extra flair to your pictures. Get your children to hold coordinating flowers for a spring or summer shoot. Love sports? Then use baseball bats in your next family photo to bring out your passion. Here are a few tips for ways to incorporate props in your next photo session.

1. Avoid trends. While you might have recently seen a few photos that incorporate a specific prop, try not to use something that will not look really dated in 20 years’ time. Classic is definitely better and there are many fun options to choose from.

2.  A picture containing indoor

Description automatically generated Be realistic. It’s easy to go wild when thinking of a theme for your photo session. You should decide on one that you can actually find props for. For example, if you want to use seasonal props, try and source them in that season as they’ll be easier to find, and before you decide to remake your favorite movie scene, think twice about whether you’ll be able to find suitable outfits for everyone in the photo.

3. Size matters. There are some larger props that work really well in photo sessions such as using your grandpa's farm tractor as a background piece. However, there are some larger props that can take away from the beauty of the photograph altogether. Make sure that your prop enhances the photo and doesn't detract from it.

4. Make it meaningful. If your child has a favorite stuffed animal or if you have a musical instrument that you treasure, try and incorporate it into your photos. This way your pictures will have more meaning to you and your family.

5. Use what you have. Make the current season work to your advantage by using what’s available. Leaves in the fall make for amazing props in photos and don’t cost a thing.

Remember, using props can be the perfect addition to your photos but make sure that they don’t become the main focus.

5 reason's you should print your photos https://www.redballoonsphotography.com/blog/2019/4/5-reasons-you-should-print-your-photos

We live in an electronic age, one where it is easy to document every moment in our lives by simply pulling out our cell phone and snapping photos and videos of our loved ones, and why not? It is after all far more convenient then lugging your dslr or point and shoot camera to your next event. I know it is my guilty pleasure to snap and snap away at my son while he is doing some of his favorite activities. mostly because if he sees my "real" camera he becomes very difficult to photograph. As a photographer I am asked all the time if I offer digital files with my packages, and at the moment I do, but I also find it important to put these images in print. Hence the reason for this aricle

1) These are your Memories

Each photo ties people you love and places you have been together...every photo you take has a story and having those photos in print brings those memories to the front of mind every time you see them. You are only pregnant for a short period of time ( 9 months )/or your baby grows with each passing day. I love being able to pull out an album and remembering when. And your kids and grand-kids will love you for it too!

2) Electronic Devices can Fail

According to mellenniata.com Hard drives will last approximately 5 yrs, dvds 7 yrs, and flash drives 8 yrs before the data can be come corrupt. Whereas a printed photo can last up to 200 years! There are still photos around from the 1800's. This is all the proof you need, that the photos you print will tell your story for generations to come!

3)Sheer Volume and Organization

Let's face it as I mentioned above it is just way to easy to get snap happy when documenting special occasions, events or vacations when your cell phone is in your back pocket and offers a good quality image.  Benefit? You always have a camera and no moment will go missed because you weren't prepared. Downfall? The sheer number of pictures you can take and store on one mobile device is amazing. and keeping them organized and easy to find is another feat all to itself. Cell phones get lost and even if you are good at uploading and storing to your cloud storage, those memories just aren't easy to access. I love to print my images from my phone yearly I have a Coffee table book for every year over the last 10 yrs. making it super convenient and easy to reminisce when I want too.

4) Easy to share with Your "Old School" Friends and family

I know, I know.... doesn't everyone have a computer or social media these days? The sad truth is No....there are still tons of people in my life that don't use Facebook, or Instagram or even have a computer for that matter. Having photo books or creating prints for these family members or friends is a great way to show them what you have been up to. Even just sending grandam a stack of pictures is a great way to keep her up to date.

5) You Hired an Artist

When you hire a photographer to take photos of your family or little one(s) you are hiring an artist, the great thing about this is you are getting someone to produce personalized Art! One of my favorite things about getting a pro to take my family pictures is that I will have beautiful art to hang throughout my house rather than the cookie cutter art purchased at the local department store. Get those CD's out of the drawer and decorate your home!

Dominik https://www.redballoonsphotography.com/blog/2014/4/dominik Here I am catching up on some extremely delayed blog posts....this one being the oldest. Every once and awhile I come across a little one that doesn't want to sleep. Dominik was one of these little stinkers, as you can tell he was quite the little ham both awake and in a deep sleep. Absolutely perfect.....A big thanks to both Mom and Dad who were amazingly flexible.

Laura & Jay https://www.redballoonsphotography.com/blog/2014/1/laura-jay I had an amazing time shooting this beautiful couple on New Years Day! And what a great way to begin my new year, doing what I love. And I have to say I love the results as well. Both Laura and Jay were amazing...and another creative Dad on my hands as well. I love it when they get involved in the creative process with me....it really makes it so much more fun. Thanks again you two! I can't wait to meet that darling little girl in a few weeks.

Ashley & Alen https://www.redballoonsphotography.com/blog/2013/12/ashley-alen At 37 weeks, it was now or never for this Maternity shoot! And thank goodness Ashley held on long enough for me and my family to get over the flu! We had such a great time. Ashley let me experiment a little with some fabric, and I discovered that Alen has a bit of a creative side....He is also tall enough to be put to work, and helped me flip the backdrops back and forth. Such a beautiful couple with such a great love for this beautiful little guy about to make his grand entrance into the world. Thanks again you too for letting me capture such an amazing time in your lives...I look forward to photographing your little man in the not so distant future ;) orward to having your

The Schoenmaker Family https://www.redballoonsphotography.com/blog/2013/12/the-schoenmaker-family I absolutely love spending time with this family, with this being our 5th session. Steph wanted to do a Penguins themed shoot, adding in a twist with hosting the shoot at the Western Fair Sports Plex we were a little chilly but it was well worth it.  Such an amazing family, with a very special and strong bond. I have loved watching this family grow.

Amanda & Chis https://www.redballoonsphotography.com/blog/2013/11/amanda-chis This Maternity shoot was by far the most fun I have had in a long time, traipsing around downtown London, where Mommy to be thought she may need to tackle a guy who looked like he was going for my camera bag (although I would never let that happen) .....too much fun. This little guy is going to make his appearce sooner rather then later, so Mom and Dad you better pick a name for him soon! Oh and I can't wait to meet this little one.

Hannah https://www.redballoonsphotography.com/blog/2013/11/hannah This baby girl was so such a sweetie, she slept like a dream, and pretty much let me do whatever I wanted with her hands and feet. She most definately inherited this from her  mommy and daddy, because they were just as laid back and easy to work with as their little princess. Oh and Please take a moment to just take in all that hair......
